Happy Mother’s Day!!! Last Sunday we celebrated Good Shepherd Sunday and as a result we focused on the ministry of the priest as the shepherd of the parish. This weekend in our First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we read of the creation of the Order of Deacons. The early Church was facing many challenges as it quickly grew in numbers and in geographic area. The Apostles, the first priests, realized that they needed assistance in caring for the needs of the people. Through prayer and the laying on of hands, these first seven deacons were commissioned to help spread the Gospel and to meet the temporal needs of the faithful. This mission continues today and we have been blessed here at St. Christopher over the years with many deacons who have served our community so well! Let us pray for our current deacons, Deacon Frank, Deacon Tom and Deacon Dave, that God may bless them and their ministry among us! The Second Reading from St. Peter and the Gospel remind us that the ministry of the Church does not belong solely to the ordained. St. Peter, at the end of that reading today, reminds us that we are all ‘a royal priesthood’. This is conferred upon us all at our baptism! In this sense we are all called to proclaim the Gospel through our prayer and through our example. There are many ministries in the Church that allow each of us to ask God where He wants us to serve. It is up to us to ask the question of God for direction! Jesus tells us in the Gospel today that if we believe in Him, we will be able to do greater works than those He did while on earth because He was returning to the Father and He and the Father would bless our works in their name! What a great commission we all have! We just need to act! As an aside, it is often said that God will make good things happen from difficult situations. I see signs of that now as we deal with the coronavirus. Families are spending more time together. Parents are more involved in their children’s education. Priorities are being reset as we are reminded that faith and health and family and friends are more important than wealth and things and sports and entertainment (all of which are good when prioritized properly!). Let’s hope that we all remember that when things return to ‘normal’. Praised Be Jesus Christ…Now and Forever!!! Father Steve Thank you to everyone who has continued to send in their donations. They are truly appreciated!
